Mr Sammy Ofer, KBE (1922-2011)
The new wing has been made possible thanks to a substantial gift by Mr Sammy Ofer, KBE.
Voyagers: Britons and the Sea
Voyagers is a new and inventive permanent gallery telling the story of Britain and the sea, illustrating the contemporary significance of maritime histories and the personal stories of our island nation.
The gallery will contain over 200 objects representing the extraordinary range of the Museum’s collection, as well as a dynamic audiovisual installation by The Light Surgeons.

About the new wing
The Sammy Ofer Wing opens access routes from the Museum to Greenwich Park with a new south entrance. It improves the Museum’s key visitor approaches from the Royal Observatory and major transport arrival points, as well as connections with the rest of the World Heritage Site.
The new wing gives visitors a complete sense of what the Museum offers: world-class displays, collections and visitor facilities, all in one accessible configuration.
It features five key elements:
- the new entrance from the south
- a substantial new space for special exhibitions, starting with High Arctic
- an open archive research centre including key iconic objects and interactive galleries - the Compass Lounge and Voyagers
- a stylish new café and brasserie, shop and upgraded visitor facilities
- flexible new learning spaces
High Arctic
The Museum has commissioned United Visual Artists (UVA) to convey the ocean’s size, beauty and vulnerability in an era of global climate change.
High Arctic will be a large-scale installation in the Sammy Ofer Wing, produced by UVA and inspired by artist Matt Clark's participation in an expedition to the Svalbard archipelago led by climate change charity Cape Farewell.
