Black holes, violent impacts and time travel: Royal Observatory Greenwich teams up with leading space scientists for Summer Science in the Planetarium

The Royal Observatory, Greenwich is teaming up with some of the UK’s leading research astronomers this summer as the popular Summer Science in the Planetarium events return for a second year. The series of four events, which kicks off next week, combines the latest space research with spectacular visuals from the Observatory’s planetarium. The full programme has now been announced, with talks from four big names from the world of space science including physicist, author and TV presenter Professor Jim Al-Khalili. Each expert will work with the Royal Observatory team to produce a unique planetarium experience, taking the audience on a journey to the furthest reaches of the Universe to explore the latest discoveries and ideas from the world of science.

Dr Serena Viti of University College London is the first expert to take the helm in the planetarium on 26 May, as she guides the audience to the stellar nurseries – glowing clouds of gas and dust where stars are born. Next up is Dr Chris Arridge of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, who introduces the giant planets beyond the Asteroid Belt and explores these massive and mysterious worlds. July sees Deputy Editor of Astronomy Now magazine, Dr Emily Baldwin, take guests on a spectacular tour of the Solar System to discover some of the most dramatic craters caused by huge space impacts. Finally, TV’s Professor Jim Al-Khalili wraps up the season with a look at the world of black holes and wormholes and asks whether our current understanding of space and time allows for the possibility of time travel.

“TV programmes like Wonders of the Universe have shown how beautiful visuals can really help to explain astronomy and space research, so using our planetarium is a fantastic opportunity as it really gives you a sense of going out into space and seeing the latest discoveries for yourself,” said Dr Marek Kukula, the Royal Observatory’s Public Astronomer. "These four unique shows will add a new dimension to our planetarium and it’s great that leading scientists are bringing their expertise to the Royal Observatory.”

More information on the events can be found on the Museum’s website at www.rmg.co.uk, tickets can also be purchased online or by calling the bookings office on 020 8312 6608.
