Lord Sterling, Chairman of National Maritime Museum made Honorary Rear Admiral

Lord Sterling of Plaistow Lord Sterling of Plaistow The Museum is very pleased to report that Her Majesty the Queen has approved the promotion of Lord Sterling of Plaistow, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, from Commodore to Honorary Rear Admiral in the Royal Naval Reserve.

Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff of the United Kingdom, wrote, "This promotion is richly deserved and recognises your immense contribution to the Naval Service over many years."

On behalf of everyone at the Museum, Kevin Fewster, AM, Director, said that this recognition also reflected Lord Sterling's commitment to the community and society, his dynamic leadership in many areas of British life, and his tireless and honorary work across a broad sweep of maritime and charitable activities.

Jeffrey Sterling joined the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company's Board as a non-executive Director in 1980, became Executive Deputy Chairman and then Executive Chairman of P&O three years later, standing down in May 2005. The Rt Hon Lord Sterling of Plaistow, GCVO CBE has been Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Maritime Museum since 2005.
