F8792-004-sml.jpgJune’s item of the month is from our rare book collections: a journal of the voyage of eight Dutch ships to the East Indies, commanded by Cornelis Van Neck and Admiral Wybrandt Van Warijck.

The journal contains detailed descriptions of the key ‘spice islands’ of South East Asia, providing information on their geography, politics and society to aid Dutch merchants in future voyages.

  1. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has a painting of van Neck’s return from the East Indies. It was painted by Hendrick Cornelisz Vroom, who also designed the tapestries featured in a previous NMM item of the month, ‘Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords’!
    Most of the Rijksmuseum is closed for refurbishment at the moment but in the meantime you can see the painting at the Amsterdams Historisch Museum:
