Until summer 2025, there is a new visitor route at the National Maritime Museum while we carry out essential improvements to the Museum's roof. Most galleries will still be open as normal, and special exhibitions are currently free for all visitors. However, the Great Map and AHOY! will be closed for the duration of the works. November's item of the month is from our rare book collections: the account of a British naval surgeon's voyage to St Petersburg on board the Smyelyi, a 74 gun ship in the service of the Russian Imperial Navy. Highlights include stories of life on board (you have to feel for the young officer who vomited at the dinner table), as well as general observations of Russian society and life in St Petersburg.
