As a museum we’re growing, with many ambitious and exciting projects, and we’re looking for conservation volunteers to join us on this voyage.
We’re offering a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the world’s foremost maritime collection and UNESCO world heritage site. So how can you help?
You can help ensure the long term care of our collection
This is a varied role, so never a dull moment and numerous opportunities for all. You’ll be helping to keep our working machinery running and ensuring the splendour and grandeur of our prestigious art collection. Find yourselves as masters of time and space safeguarding the treasures of the Royal Observatory to caring for sailors craft and preserving our incredible maritime history.
We’re looking for team players, who can spare one weekday, to help us clean, maintain and present our open display collection whilst sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm for conservation with our visitors.
You’ll be volunteering with our professional conservation team so full training for the role will be given, with workplace qualifications available, to develop your conservation skills.
If you’re a hands on practical person with a lightness of touch and an eye for detail then apply to come along to one of our taster sessions to find out more. This is a great way to make new friends, learn new skills and discover a wealth of treasures.
You can help to document our conservation work
The archival collection occupies more than 4.5 miles of shelving and we have enlisted NADFAS (National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Societies) Heritage Volunteers to help look after them. Volunteers are also used in other areas to help and perform a valuable support in documenting the conservation work. This includes both photography and transferring legacy data to our electronic collections database.
Applying for volunteering opportunities
Volunteering opportunities are advertised in our Jobs and Volunteering section. If you are interested in working in the Conservation and Preservation department, please get in touch.
