Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-59)
Isambard was born in Portsmouth, only son of the French engineer Marc Brunel. He was chief engineer for the Clifton suspension bridge, Bristol docks, the Great Western Railway, and for the steamships Great Western, Great Britain and Great Eastern. He died 150 years ago on 15 September 1859, six days after an explosion during the Great Eastern's sea trials had killed six firemen.
