Why didn't George Washington join the Royal Navy?
George Washington was destined for a Midshipman’s berth in the Royal Navy, until his mother forbade it.
His family were close friends with the British Admiral Edward Vernon (the Washington family home is called ‘Mount Vernon’) and with his influence, young George Washington would have followed a naval career in the service of King George.
Due to his mother’s fears, he followed a very different military and political career.
