Captain Cook's Ensign

Naval ships in the 18th century wore red, white or blue ensigns depending on the rank of the admiral commanding their squadron. Ships on detached duties such as those of Captain Cook wore red ensigns. Before 1801, the Union flag in the canton of the ensign was without St Patrick’s saltire (red diagonal cross).
