Sea-monster mask

It is a cold, dark night at sea. You are all alone on watch while the crew sleep soundly below. All you can hear are your footsteps echoing on the frozen decks, and the gentle slap of the waves against the ship.

You glance into the deep murky waters below… and to your horror, you see a simply enormous yellow eye staring back at you!

Terrified, you race to the other end of the ship, sliding on the ice in your frenzy. At last you reach the stern and lean over the rail to catch your breath. There, in the water below, are at least ten thick tentacles! Amazed, you look back at how far you have run – over 100 metres. Surely even sea monsters aren’t that big?

As you gaze in wonder, the giant squid turns with surprising speed and plummets back into the deep...

To make the sea-monster mask you will need…

  • Scissors
  • Colouring pens
  • String

What to do...

First, download the mask:

Colour in and cut out this scary monster.

To wear the mask, ask an adult to help you cut out the eye-holes carefully with a pair of scissors. Then attach a piece of string to either side of the monster face.

Frighten your friends and relatives by wearing the mask and making scary sea monster noises!

If that doesn’t work, try designing and making your own sea-monster mask. For inspiration look at some 'real’ sea monsters in the links on the right.
