MLA London creative placement workshop - Identity Textiles

Amy teaching Lucia and Melissa how to lead a textile workshop Amy teaching Lucia and Melissa how to lead a textile workshop

'Identity Textiles - Thursday 21 February 2008, on the Quarter Deck at the National Maritime Museum'

One of the intended outcomes chosen for the project by Lucia and Melissa was to lead a workshop and create a mural that other young people could contribute to within the Museum. At present the NMM does not have exhibition space for learning projects, so as a compromise the MLA London team created a mural which could be presented online.

The intention of the mural is to tap into virtual communities of young people and encourage them to contribute to the project by adding their images of identity.

During the morning Melissa and Lucia were trained by Amy Cameron (a NMM Education Officer) to lead a textiles workshop. In the afternoon Melissa and Lucia were then able to lead the session, which included an introductory tour of the Atlantic Worlds Gallery as well as the hands-on craft workshop. The workshop participants, who were aged between 4 and 16 years, were encouraged to make a textile that reflected their identity, either through their interests, memories or home. The participants' textiles were photographed and uploaded onto Flickr to start the online identity mural.

Check out the photos on Flickr to see images from the workshop, where you can also add images that represent identity.
