Admiral Thomas Mathews, 1676 - 1751
Claude Arnulphy, 1697 - 1786
Mathews was Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean and Arnulphy painted him in 1743, while his fleet was blockading the French at Toulon. Arnulphy, a French artist working in Aix-en-Provence, appears to have visited the British ships in Hyères Bay and painted portraits of their officers on board. Two more are in the Museum's collection and another is known. Mathews engaged the French off Toulon in 1744. The indecisive outcome led to his dismissal from the Navy.
