Family History Research
Please note:
---
We regret that we cannot undertake research on your behalf or answer specific enquiries about family history. If you cannot visit the Museum, please see our list of independent researchers who can carry out the research for you.
The links below provide information on how you can find details of your family's history at sea using the Museum's library and archives and other resources outside the museum. Our records can help you trace:
- members of the merchant navy
- vessels and voyages
- passengers on ships and liners
- members of the Royal Navy
For a general overview of how to research your family history from maritime records, see
- Research guide A3 – tracing family history from maritime records
- Tracing people – guide to resources in the Caird Library
Please be aware that tracing people who served or travelled on ships can be a difficult and complex task as you will probably have to consult a lot of different records.
