This lecture was given on 24 November 2009 at the Institute of Historical Research as part of the 10th-anniversary celebrations of the British Maritime History Seminars series. This annual seminar series, programmed by the National Maritime Museum, and run in conjunction with the Institute of Historical Research, aims to disseminate new research in British maritime history with a different theme each year.

We hope to record and publish more lectures in due course.
