Marine Education Initiative

The Marine Environment Education Initiative

Starfish Starfish. Image: Digital Vision As part of the Planet Ocean initiative, the Museum worked in partnership with The Crown Estate to fund the development, delivery and evaluation of educational programmes on subjects relating to the marine environment.

The Marine Environment Education Initiative was a three-year project. Programmes were developed specifically for young people aged 11–16, within both the formal education sector and wider communities. The project also involved the development of associated teaching resources and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions for teachers and other educators.

The content for schools was developed first, and focused on three key areas of the national curriculum – citizenship, geography and science – all of which form the foundation of the marine environment subject base.
