Secondary - Transatlantic Slavery Study Day

Transatlantic Slavery Study Day (KS3)

History, Key Stage 3

This study day includes a variety of sessions to help students explore the history of transatlantic slavery and promote skills in independent enquiry. All sessions are facilitated by Museum staff and help students explore a range of themes relating to the transatlantic slave trade.

Object handling

During this hands-on session students can use replica objects to explore the system of transatlantic slavery and its impact, as well as themes of resistance and abolition.

Manuscripts

This is a unique opportunity to view the Museum’s collection of original documents, including ships’ logs, plantation inventories and slave-ship account books.

The Atlantic: Slavery, Trade, Empire gallery

This gallery displays a wide range of material relating to transatlantic slavery. While visiting the gallery students use mobile learning devices to ‘collect’ objects and record their own interpretations, which are subsequently available on-line for use in the classroom.
