The fate of John Franklin's lost expedition has been one of the most enduring mystries of the past 170 years, and has inspired countless works of fiction attempting to answer those unanswered questions.
What makes a great alternate history story? What are the specific challenges of the genre? And how should we approach creating something original in this increasingly popular strain of fiction? In this day-long workshop, we shall be looking at some examples of the form – from Stephen King to Robert Harris; Philip K Dick to D J Taylor – and set about writing some of our own.
