Visitor notice: On Saturday 11 November, the Great Hall, Tulip Stairs and some ground floor rooms will be closed from 2pm. The rest of the House and galleries remain open including the Armada Portrait

This exquisite globe shows the hero Hercules supporting the starry celestial sphere on his shoulders.

Turned from ivory, Hercules's back is bowed under the weight of the firmament and he wears his identifying lion skin. The stars are picked out on a shining brass globe with the constellations marked.

The paired terrestrial globe is supported by Atlas. The two items would have been the prize of a scholarly collection in aesthetics as much as astronomical subject matter.
