Indian Ocean Seafarers

Unseen photos of merchant seamen from the British maritime world, 1891-1961

Find out more about the often overlooked contribution Asian sailors made to British maritime history, through our display of historic photographs and documents, some of which have never been on public display before.

The photos depict the working lives of men serving on British ships during the 20th century, though the practice of employing Asian men goes back much further in time.

Co-curated with members of the Brick Lane Circle in Tower Hamlets, who have worked with Museum staff to provide historical and cultural insights into our collections.
