Safe Passage in Dangerous Waters

During the mid-18th century trading increased dramatically as the great European powers colonized more overseas territories.

Trading ships sailed along recognized routes, known as trade routes, which were dictated by winds and currents.

These routes were well known and merchants ships using them were vulnerable to attack.
