A View of Cape Stephens in Cook's Straits [New Zealand] with Waterspout, 1776

© NMM, London, MOD Art Collection

Artist: William Hodges
Date: 1776
Repro ID: BHC1906
Materials: Oil on canvas
Measurements: 1359 x 1930 mm

Introducing the painting: The painting records the 'Resolution's' encounter with several waterspouts off Cape Stephens, New Zealand, on 17 May 1773.

It includes exotic waterfowl and indigenous wildlife, but is not a literal version of events.

The dramatic depiction of earth, air, fire and water conforms to contemporary ideas of the Sublime.
