Introducing the painting: Dusky Bay is a remote inlet at the southern end of New Zealand's South Island.

The 'Resolution' entered the bay on 26 March 1773 after 117 days at sea. It was the crew's first Pacific landfall.

The painting includes two separate incidents from the crew's six-week stay in Dusky Bay:

- Finding the waterfall that they named Cascade Cove

- Meeting a nomadic Maori group.
