Introducing the painting: The 'Resolution' and 'Adventure' first anchored in Matavai Bay, on the north side of Tahiti, in mid-August 1773.

The painting focuses on the interaction of Cook's ships and crew with the local population.

Hodges painted several images of the bay. An earlier version of this picture replaces Cook's ships with Tahitian war galleys.
