William Hodges: His influences and contemporaries

Claude Lorrain (1604-82)
One of the leading classical painters of the 17th century, Lorrain influenced generations of landscape painters.
Examples of his work are held by The National Gallery, London.

Salvator Rosa (1615-73)
This 17th-century Italian landscape artist produced highly romantic or Sublime images of the natural landscape.
Examples of Rosa's work can be seen online at The National Museums & Galleries of Wales and The Dulwich Picture Gallery website. The National Gallery, London offers a number of the artist's works to view online.

Gaspar Dughet (1615-75)
Also called Gaspard Poussin, this Italian-born artist was one of the leading landscapes painters of his day. His naturalistic work can be seen to have influenced both Richard Wilson and his pupil, Hodges.
A short biography is available on The Wallace Collection website whilst The British Museum holds examples of his work.

Richard Wilson (1714-82)
Welsh-born landscape artist and founder member of the Royal Academy. Hodges was Wilson's apprentice from 1758 to 1763.
The National Museum & Gallery, Cardiff holds a large number of works by Wilson. A number of these are available online.

Joseph Vernet (1714-89)
This French landscape and marine painter was renowned for his atmospheric seascapes.
The National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. has a created a detailed online tour of Vernet's 'The Shipwreck' which introduces a number of other pieces by the artist.
The French Musée de la Marine produced a Flash microsite to support their 2003 exhibition of Vernet's work. Although in French only, the site displays a wealth of Vernet's work.

Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-97)
William Hodges's use of light can be compared with that of his contemporary, Joseph Wright of Derby.
The National Gallery of Victoria holds several of Wrights' paintings and these can be viewed online.
A number of paintings can also be seen on the National Museums Liverpool site.
The largest collection of the artist's work in any public gallery is held by The Derby Museum & Art Gallery which has an online gallery area.
