Your Ocean: What should we be doing to help fish stocks recover?
LONG LINING AND HAND CATCHING ARE THE BESTWAYS TO STILL CATCH FISH BUT PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT. NETTING SHOULD BE ALOT LESS COMMONPLACE
THERE NEEDS TO BE AREAS OF WATERS WHERE FISHING ISN'T PERMITTED, these would over time become a place for breeding before the fish migrate to the other waters. there coukd also be put in place rules where fishermn can only catch a certain amount of fish and only certian fish in certain seasons, this gives the fish the in between time to recover their stocks and breed.
BASICALL MINIMISE THE AMOUNT OF FISH ALLOWWED TO BE CAUGHT BY FISHERS EACH YEAR THUS INCREASE IN PRICE DUE TO SCARCITY YHUS DECREASE IN REQUES
IF FISHERMEN ARE CAUGHT WITH ILLEGAL NETS DO NOT FINE THEM £50000 BUT TAKE THEIR LIFIHOOD AWAY TO TEACH THEM A LESSON
We should create legislations to make sure that deep sea fishing is done responsibly, without harming the eco system of the ocean.
Merlin & Dhanya Alfred, http://London
Insist that processed fish foods, such as supermarket fish fillets are from sustainable stocks and not all haddock and cod.
whats the point? we can all hammer away at the people responsible about the state of the fish stocks but it wont do anygood...the fact is they just dont care.but when the fish are gone it will be interesting to see what they have to say for themselves.
it's time governments should wake up and outlaw pollution that could easily be better regulated, our future is in their hands. i want my children to have a future
make bigger holes in the nets to let little fish escape. more fish caught by handline
The Common Fisheries Policy has been a complete disaster. Since its inception in the 1970s it has failed in its brief to create sustainable fishing. Another example of the useless waste of Brussels. All fishing should cease in the North Sea to allow fish stocks recover and avoid a repeat of the herring crash of the 1970s.
we shouldnt eat so much fish so that they can recover quicker and recyclyle more so that the waste dosent kill them aswell and we should breedour own fish to keep all the fishes alive.
i think the time has come that we need to accept that we only have limited resources. controls are needed with total ban on some species being caught. the fishermen will need proper compensation to allow them to cope with this change.
only fish when it is needed and stop wasting food
Bel Burnell Molyneux, http://Greenwwich
Make smaller nets but bigger mesh to let more fish escape
eat less fishor all become vegetarians
its not just fish thats sufferin,we need to think about everything thats happening to our world especially for our children and their children
sally eagles, http://dartford
We should catch small amounts of fish(animals in generel) or of just what we need. That way, both the fish and us will benefit!
We should introduce a law to instruct that fishermen are only allowed to fish a certain percetage of all fish species. I say all species because if one species eg. cod are limited they'll move onto another species and mass fish them and put them in danger.
I also think this should apply to all animals and not just fish.
i think that unwanted fish should be either sold to countries that do want them and also when we use the fish we should use all of it so nothing goes to waste also to stop numbers decreaseing there should be fish conservation societies.
jacob baker, sunderland
needs to be more controlled and methods should be changed to protect the young fish.
i think overfishing is wrong and they should stop and i think there should be a ban on cod fishing
Encourage children to visit the Marine Stewardship Council's website to learn about their Fish & Kids project. They can find out what they can do to help!
Laura, London, UK
to not pollute the sea or da rivers cause fish areliving creature and need a clean inviorament to live in b
poppie, englond and london
SHUT DOWN FISH AND chip shops.
we will try to only eat fish which is caught humanly.
dylan and elise, essex england
put a cod fishing ban in parts worstly affected+in these areas put a special marine nature park dedicatead to those fish worst affected by over fishing
Harry, Derby, U.K
People are catching fish in big nets, which puts fisherman in the unemployment line, so we should stop usong huge nets for mass fishing. We are not doing enough.
Laiive, Portsmouth, England
A good idea is given here we must continue to be aware and certainly use fishing nets and NOT trawl nets!
we must regulated the amount of fish taken out of the enviroment with more motivation and coviction. We should have rotating harvest years to allow stocks to recover.
Clark Rivers, Edmonton
Each person should havr to catch own fish or buy from small fisherman who catch their own. no mass farming.. but that qon;t happen bexuase humans are too greedy!!
use line fishing not trawl nets
will Beange, Sidcup
ONLY CATCH WHAT WE KNOW WE WILL USE. SO WE DONT HAVE TO THROW ANY BACK.
CAZ, SAWBRIDGEWORTH UK
Ban all cod fishing to let stocks recover now!!!
Andrew Milner, London
The blame lies with Europe! Not enough is done in Europe to put pressure on the greedy fishing nations especially France & Spain who are purposely overfishing and who are breaking the law! For the sake of our depleeted stocks. EU nations should be given a hefty fine. However, the EU is too preocuppied with Mickey Mouse issues (they cant even deal with the CAP issue!)to even care! EU wake up and smell the fish rot, because if you dont do something soon it will be far too late.
i think we need to limit thw amount of fish we catch so there will be some for tommoro
sean mccann, hamiton, va, usa
do away with big factory ships. very strict with fish quoters
jordan boyd, lydd kent
I go fishing i think it is fine to catch and eat your catch but to kill it and chuck it back is wrong.
Conor moore, Isle of wight/Totland bay
my father is a fisherman but recently i have become reallly guilty of his job, he catches over 300 fish a week and i really disagree with his methods of catching them, because he uses explosives
jamie dunbury, england
i think fishing should be band for 2 years and we should leave them in their desired environment from today
laura simpson, berylands
You would never dream of massive hunting expeditions for meat - we farm this. So why do this for fish all around the world. Use fish farming and solve any health issues rather than insist on wild fish every day.
i pledge to be more aware of what i use while cleaning my home. i will not use any bleach.
Fish farming is the future.
Boris Underwood, Mongomeryshire
stop using our rivers and ponds as dumping grounds for waste
Janine Neubronner, Lewisham London
cut back on eating cod and think carefully about buying shellfish.
pollution is terrible stop it now. we should limit the amount of fish being caught
carol and roxy, folketone, england
Having originated from a township of south africa, we always saw fish as a luxury. I cannot understand the way that fish are wasted in this country. The way they are farmed is a disgrace and a waste. In my township people could not even spell fish ley alone know how to farm them proper.( Please excuse my english)
pietre, Greenwich (ex south africa)
I think that there shoud be a realistic limit of how many tonnes of fish can be fished in a year. Also we could create more controlled breeding programs for highly demanded species of fish.
Vicki C, Braintree, England
Pollution is the problem of all people and I think everyone must care about it particulary people from devolopped contries.[sory for the mistake,I'm french]
i think that part of the problem is pollution as it isn't only the fact that the fishermen are catching tons of fish it also all the litterbugs out there. STOP all that pollution and maybe so many fish wouldn't die of a year but people do need to eat fish so that is part of the reason as well!
Holly, Essex, England
Cut down pollutoin as the enviroment is important and gives us lots
I think the poloution in the world is discrassfull. fish are dying because we just throw are rubish away . thats one reason why they are dying another is that fishaman are catching them. then they kill them to be eaten this should be stoped.
I think that pollution should be cut dow as soon as possible,we should also leave sea creatures alone.
Charles Norton, Rugby,UK
The environment is incredibly important. We must look after it by cutting down the amount of pollution.
you could try to get fish that were bred at fish farms (?) well a place that breeds their own fish... then the fish in the ocean will multiply
Laurel, Phoenix USA
Even for the most concerned it is hard to know if what you are eating is sustainale or not. We need better labeled food and stricter rules on using labels like 'dolphin friendly' or 'sustainable'. Clear information is the only way forward.
Make Rick Stein Fisheries minister! This would encourage the fishing of sustainable speies!
Challenge shops and restaurants to prove that the fish they sell is caught sustainably, by showing you the Marine Stewardship Council eco-label!
Jess and Amy, London, UK
I don't know but certainly a three-year moratorium [passive non fishing] to allow growth and development might restore some stocks. Too many underage fish are caught and destroyed under legal regulations.
N. Ruddock, England
Leave them alone for a particular season and especially during their breeding one in order to multiply their species.
Reduce amount being fished from the sea and encourage use of farms.
Declare Marine National Parks over about 15% of Britain's waters- 'no take' zones representing biodiversity.
There are plenty of delicious alternatives to cod, which is over-fished. Find a good fishmonger and try something new.
