2011 winners
This was the third year of the Royal Observatory’s competition to uncover your best photographs of stars, planets, galaxies and more. We received nearly 800 entries from astronomers around the world – that’s nearly double the number we received in 2010!
With the help of our friends at Sky at Night Magazine and the photo-sharing website Flickr, we asked you to submit photographs in the categories of ‘Earth and Space’, ‘Our Solar System’, ‘Deep Space’ and ‘Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year’. The two prizes for ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘People and Space’ feature again this year and we also introduced a new prize for photographs taken with a ‘Robotic Scope’. After much deliberation, our judges selected the 24 prize-winners which you can see here. Congratulations to all of them.

Astronomy Photographer of the Year app
Astronomy Photographer of the Year 1.0 for iPhone and iPad is the perfect app for astronomy and photography enthusiasts, allowing users to explore 90 breathtaking images of space.
Winning, runner-up and highly commended entries from all four years of the Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition are included within the app, in addition to judges’ comments and technical information about each image. The app allows you to browse photographs, read comments from photographers and experts, bookmark your favorite image, play a slideshow of selected images and share any entry on Facebook, via Twitter or by email.
