Thank you to everyone who entered our High Arctic competition. There were some excellent entries, and six groups were shortlisted to attend our prize day on Monday 9 January.  From these entries, our judges chose a winning group from each age category, as well as an overall winning group. See the finalists and the winning entries

What's happening to our environment?

‘Our planet is changing. The way we live our lives is affecting the environment, causing melting icebergs, rising seas and extreme weather.’

We want to raise awareness of these issues and get other people to think about them too. With help from Cape Farewell and United Visual Artists, we’ve produced High Arctic, an immersive and interactive installation inspired by an expedition to the Arctic.

Running alongside this we’ve also launched the High Arctic competition. We’re inviting young people to reflect on environmental issues that concern them, and in groups to create a piece of art that communicates their concern for the environment and how the changes are affecting them. Find out more

Cape Farewell

Cape Farewell is committed to supporting creative ways of engaging young people in climate issues.

Groups of students from around the world have voyaged to the Arctic on board the Noorderlicht sailing schooner as part of Cape Farewell’s programme of youth expeditions, mirroring the expeditions for professional artists and scientists such as the one Matt Clark took part in.

During the expeditions, the students worked with top scientists and artists to carry out scientific research and create individual art projects inspired by environmental issues that concerned them.

Find out more about Cape Farewell’s youth expeditions and some of the creative projects developed by students who’ve taken part.

Cape Farewell resources

Cape Farewell has developed free learning resources for schools inspired by the expeditions, including videos and lesson plans.

Artists

Many other artists concerned about the environment have taken part in Cape Farewell’s expeditions including musicians KT Tunstall, Jarvis Cocker and DJ Spooky, world beat box champion Shlomo, writers Yann Martel and Vikram Seth, and artists Antony Gormley and Rachel Whiteread.

The expedition

In September 2010, Matt Clark travelled to the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard with the arts and climate science organisation Cape Farewell. Matt is concerned about climate change and wanted to work alongside climate scientists to better understand the environmental changes taking place in the Arctic.

Matt's installation at the National Maritime Museum – called High Arctic – is a personal reflection of his experience during the expedition. It’s an expression of his concern for the environment, and it invites others to think about the impact their behaviour has on the world.

See more of Matt’s journey.
