This November, Cutty Sark will be 149 years old. We are very excited to host BBC Singers in celebration of this anniversary, the first of a series of events in the lead up to a big year ahead in 2019.
Join the BBC Singers as they celebrate Cutty Sark’s 149th birthday with a unique evening of Renaissance choral music, jazz trumpet and 21st century sea songs featuring conductor James Morgan and jazz trumpeter Tom Gardner.
The BBC Singers are an exciting vocal group who perform everything from Baroque vocal music to world premieres by composers such as Laura Mvula. Up-and-coming jazz trumpet player Tom Gardner has played with superstar artists ranging from Gregory Porter to Gary Barlow, and this collaboration with the BBC Singers is the next step in his varied musical experience.
With the expertise of guest conductor James Morgan, they bring together magical sounds from the spheres of the sea and sacred music alongside jazz improvisations in the stunning performance space at Cutty Sark.

To mark Cutty Sark's 150th anniversary, Cutty Sark Theatre will be hosting an array of performances and events through 2019-2020 to celebrate her history. Kickstarting this year of cultural delights, BBC Singers will be returning with a second concert to celebrate Cutty Sark's place in trade history and her many connections across the globe that make her such an iconic national treasure to this very day.
World music fusion band Kabantu collaborates with the BBC Singers to explore music that exists beyond boundaries. Bringing together music celebrating the Cutty Sark’s trade routes from multiple countries and eras, it is set to be a voyage full of energy and excitement!
Kabantu is a quintet from Manchester who unravels new marriages of music from around the globe to celebrate the space where different cultures meet. The BBC Singers are an exciting vocal group who perform everything from sacred vocal music to world premieres by composers such as Laura Mvula. Both groups have performed at an array of venues and festivals across the UK and beyond including the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, but this is the first season they perform on a ship.
