The Plimsoll Sensation : the Great Campaign to Save Lives at Sea /Nicolette Jones
A biography of Samuel Plimsoll (1824-1898), politician and reformer and the story of his campaign to improve the safety of merchant shipping. Plimsoll's focus was on 'coffin ships', vessels which were overloaded, unseaworthy and often overinsured by unscrupulous owners who risked the lives of their crew and passengers. Plimsoll devised a load line on a ship's hull which would indicate the maximum safe draught and as a result the minimum freeboard for the vessel in various operating conditions. He entered Parliament as an MP in 1867 but his efforts to introduce legislation for the adoption of the line were thwarted by the number of MPs with shipowning interests until 1876 when the Merchant Shipping Act gave stringent powers of inspection to the Board of Trade and made the line a requirement for ships leaving British ports. Known thereafter as the Plimsoll Line, the line was adopted internationally in 1930 with the first International Convention on Load Lines. Appendices include a collection of songs and poems about Plimsoll, a chronology, detailed notes and a bibliography.

Modern shipping disasters 1963-1987
"This book is the follow-up to Charles Hocking's Dictionary of the Disasters at Sea, which listed the great majority of shipping casualties from 1824 to 1962, and has been a valuable source of information to insurers, salvors, divers and treasure-seekers, as well as historians and ship lovers, for many years. Norman Hooke now presents a further 25 years of meticulous information on all merchant and naval losses and constructive total losses over 500 tons for the aficionado and the researcher's bookshelf and there is also information on smaller vessels, down to 100 gross registered tons, where loss of life was reported to exceed 15. Ships included are listed alphabetically by vessel name and as a further aid to the reader are also indexed by year of loss in an appendix. The author also analyses over the 25-year period loss of life due to maritime disasters and the losses sustained in all international conflicts since 1963, including ships trapped in the Suez Canal and the casualties of the Gulf War and the Falklands. He lists all known specifications and history of the losses in a precise form which enables over 6,000 vessels to be included."--Provided by the publisher.
