Run for Cutty Sark in its 150th year

Originally built to last just 30 years, 2019 marks Cutty Sark’s 150th birthday. Support the ship by running in the Virgin Money London Marathon or Vitality Big Half.

Since the start of the London Marathon in 1981, Cutty Sark has been one of the first major landmarks encountered by runners on the route. She is a much-loved London landmark and holds a very special place in the local community of South East London.

London Marathon - 28 April 2019

Each year, Royal Museums Greenwich allocates exclusive and guaranteed Golden Bond places for runners to take part in the Virgin Money London Marathon. In 2019, we have 6 places for runners to take place in the London Marathon on behalf of Cutty Sark.

Fundraising

Minimum sponsorship for the London Marathon is £1,500 and for the Big Half is £500. The money raised through our dedicated team of runners will go towards a sustainable future for the ship and its educational programmes for schools, families and communities.

In 2018, Team Cutty Sark raised enough money to guarantee a whole term of Cutty Sark’s Schools Programme, as well as an entire year of bursaries, reaching up to 360 children from low-income families.

  • A donation of £140 would enable up to 30 school children from underprivileged backgrounds take part in the Schools Programme through the Cutty Sark Bursary Scheme
  • Stretch your personal goal from £1,500 to £1,680 to enable an entire year of bursaries reaching up to 360 children from low-income families in Greenwich, Lewisham, Bexley, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Barking and Dagenham

Testimonials from previous runners

“Having grown up in London, I spent many happy days of my childhood running around the Cutty Sark and Greenwich Museums, so it feels right to give back to them! It is also amazing how the Cutty Sark has survived 150 years, considering it was only built to last a fraction of this time, so I think it is important that this historic monument is properly maintained and preserved so that generations to come can enjoy it in the way that I have been able to.” – Vicky

“as a local resident – the Cutty Sark is such an icon which we all love - raising money to help with its maintenance and everything it has to offer locally would be a pleasure. I recall moving to London (many years ago!) and my grandfather coming to visit me – he had travelled down from Sheffield where I am from.  His face when he say the Cutty Sark was magical. This was pre the refurbishments and terrible fire – but there was a collection box on the outside of the boat and my Pa (as I called him) got his wallet out and put a £5 into it without hesitation.  His comment was along the lines “this is the best money spent in London” and he didn’t go on-board – just looked as it from the outside.  So its famous and needs to be protected and if I can help to raise some money then that would be great!  My kids and their cousins love a tip down to the boat and playing on deck!” - Frances
