'Northumbrian Aurora' by Jonathan Farooqi (UK), aged 15 was highly commended for the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2016 Young Competition. Jonathan took the image at Cresswell Beach, Northumberland, UK on 6 March 2016, using a Canon EOS 550D camera with 18 mm f/3.5 lens, at ISO 1600 with 8-second exposure.

What the photographer says

‘I took this photo of the Aurora Borealis [the Northern Lights] while standing on the beach at Cresswell. I looked out of the window of our suburban house to be confronted by a magnificent display of the aurora, visible despite the light pollution. My mum was easily persuaded to drive us to the beach for a better look!’ Jonathan Farooqi

What the judges say

‘I remember the excitement at the time this was visible. What a fabulous capture of a very bright British aurora.’ Jon Culshaw
