How many people can skate at the same time?

The Queen’s House Ice Rink has been rated as comfortably accommodating 300 skaters per session. The rink operates to a minimum measurement of 3sqm per skater which is much larger than is required, so we would never have too many skaters on the ice.

Ice Marshals are present on the rink at all times during all sessions and you are required to adhere to our safe-skating guidelines. It is a public ice rink that caters for all ages and abilities. The ice rink is not for professional use, and as such, skating at speed, skating backwards, tricks and acrobatic manoeuvres are not permitted - this is for the safety of all skaters. During busy sessions, the ice surface can become rutted due to the action of skating. Please ensure that you are skating in a suitable manner, always keeping a look out for ice conditions and other skaters.

If you are a beginner, nervous or infrequent skater, or a family with young children, it may be best to skate during a time when the rink is less busy. Generally, the rink is quieter on weekday evenings and weekends in November/early December. You can always email QHIRR@rmg.co.uk to find out how busy sessions are likely to be.

Can I book a children's skate aid?

Yes. We have penguin skate aids available for children visiting the rink.

These are only available to hire onsite at the Queen’s House Ice Rink, subject to availability on the day you visit. Advance booking is not possible.

They cost £5 each to hire, payable by card only. Cash cannot be accepted. Skate aids are non-refundable.

Skaters can be up to 120cm to use the skate aid. This is a health and safety rule and there will be no exceptions made.

Staff will measure the skater before purchase of the skate aid is made, and present you with a wristband to collect your penguin skate aid before you get on the ice.

Our penguin skate aids will need to be pushed and will help children with balance and their skating - we do not have skate aids available for adults. Skate aids must always be supervised by an adult and must not be left unattended on the ice.

As an optional safety extra, we will offer free of charge helmets at the rink, subject to availability.

We offer three sizes, inclusive for children, teens, and adults.

Our skate sizes range from Junior 8 – 14.

We also have bob skates available for younger skaters.

All skate types and sizes are subject to availability.

Ice skates can only be worn when on the ice and in the skate exchange. Under no circumstances will skates be permitted in the buildings of Royal Museums Greenwich.

What happens if the weather is bad or the ice is wet?

The ice rink will operate in nearly all weather conditions thanks to our advanced cooling equipment.

In the unlikely event that the ice rink must close, alternative sessions will be offered. We will endeavour to provide you with as much notice as possible and reschedule your booking at another available time slot this season agreed with you. Any contact will be in the form of an email, so you are advised to check your email inbox before visiting to avoid an unnecessary journey should your ticket be cancelled. We regret that no refunds or date transfers will be given due to bad weather.

Outdoor ice rinks are subject to the elements. Due to rain, unseasonably warm weather, high winds or a combination of these weather conditions, the surface of the ice rink can develop a layer of water. It is safe to skate on a wet rink. We advised wearing gloves – not only to help with the cold but also to aid traction on the ice when getting up should you fall.

What should I wear?

We recommend wrapping up in warm, outdoor clothing and please wear gloves.

On all outdoor rinks there is a risk of getting wet from surface water on the ice.

We suggest bringing spare socks for after your session in case your skates get wet.

The rink is safe to skate on if it is raining or snowing, but you will be open to the elements. Please check the weather forecast and dress appropriately.

We have extra Gloves and Socks available to purchase on site, but we still recommend you bring your own as these are subject to availability.

Can I leave my bags?

Bags of any description are not permitted on the ice, so we advise only bringing essentials with you. Please do not bring large baggage, as there will not be space to store it securely.

Limited storage will be available at the rink, subject to availability on the day. It costs £2 per item and is payable by card. Cash cannot be accepted.

Storage facilities are used entirely at your own risk. Operators Arena Group and Royal Museums Greenwich do not accept any liability for loss, theft or damage except if caused by intent or gross negligence of the company or its employees.

Is there a minimum age to skate?

The minimum age to skate is three years old. Children under 13 must be supervised by an adult (18+) on the ice and accompanied at the skate exchange. A ratio of one adult to five children will be accepted.

You can skate on our rink up to any age, although you undertake skating at your own risk. Skating is not recommended for pregnant women or anyone with serious illness or heart conditions.

Do you have skate marshalls?

Our ice skate marshalls are on the ice rink to monitor safe skating and will assist when possible if you are a novice. We ask all skaters to follow any instructions given by the skate marshalls regarding direction or separation, as these are to protect you and other skaters. Please ensure you leave the rink promptly when requested.

Is there food and drink available?

Yes, warm up with hot drinks and seasonal fare at the Benugo café, which is located inside the skate exchange, next to the ice rink. The café opens daily (except Christmas Day when the rink is closed) from 11am (23 November – 21 December) and from 10am (22 December – 7 January). The café will close at 8.15pm daily.

The café will accept contactless payment methods only – cash will not be accepted.

Do I have to pay for a ticket if I’m just watching?

This is not a covered area so please wrap up warm.

When booking an outdoor event, you accept that the weather conditions may affect your enjoyment of the event.

The ice rink is closed on Christmas Day, but we are open all other days.

Is the Queen’s House Ice Rink accessible? Is there wheelchair access?

Yes! The Queen’s House Ice Rink, viewing area and café are all accessible. The ice rink is accessible for wheelchair users. Both manual and electric wheelchairs are welcome on the ice. We recommend prebooking your tickets online.

We also host specific relaxed sessions for anyone who needs a calmer, more relaxed environment to get the most out of their visit. Companion tickets are offered in all session types, at no extra cost to disabled visitors who would not otherwise be able to attend a skating session without an assistant. Please note that we cannot provide an assistant on the ice.

I would like to celebrate a special occasion; do you cater for private events?

Should you want to hire the entire rink or organise a bespoke package, please contact events@rmg.co.uk

Can my child have a birthday party at the ice rink and café?

Unfortunately, we cannot cater for birthday parties on the Queen’s House Ice Rink, and we have no discounted tickets available. You are welcome to purchase tickets for any available session, but please note that you and your party will be skating alongside members of the public.

The minimum age to skate is three years old. Children under 13 must be supervised by an adult (18+) on the ice and accompanied at the skate exchange. A ratio of one adult to five children will be accepted, so please ensure you adhere to this and that children are supervised at all times on the ice and inside the skate exchange.

The ice rink café is located inside the skate exchange for skaters and spectators. The offer is takeaway as seating is limited. It is not possible to reserve tables/space in the café. We expect the café to be very busy during peak times.

What happens if I have tested positive for COVID-19?

Please do not attend your skating session if you, or any of your party, are feeling unwell or have tested positive for COVID-19. Email us at QHIRR@rmg.co.uk and we will arrange to reschedule your ticket to another date before the season ends on 7th January 2024.
