Arrange a preliminary visit
To make sure you get the most out of your visit we recommend that teachers arrange a preliminary visit to plan practical details and to assist in briefing group leaders and pupils before they arrive.
Pre-visits can be arranged free of charge for a maximum of two teachers per group once your booking has been confirmed.
Parking is limited in Greenwich, so please use public transport if possible, we are located in Zone 2, 20 minutes from central London by DLR or rail.
Pre-booking is essential, get full information on prices.
The main deck of the ship – also known as the weather deck – is exposed to the elements. There is some shelter in the deckhouses, but please bring appropriate clothing in case you get caught in a storm!
Arriving at Cutty Sark
On arrival, please report to the main visitor reception with a copy of your confirmation letter. Your group will need to wait outside while you are checked in.
Once you have checked in, a member of staff will show your group in via the schools’ entrance, which is located in the access tower next to the ship.
There are toilets in the visitor centre beneath the ship and two accessible toilets on site.
Limited facilities are provided for storage of coats and small bags during your visit. We cannot take responsibility for any loss or damage to personal belongings during your visit. Please advise students not to bring any valuable items on site.
There are no lunch spaces on the ship, but there are plenty of picnic places nearby, including:
- Cutty Sark Gardens
- Old Royal Naval College lawns (including sheltered areas)
- Greenwich Park (including sheltered colonnades at the National Maritime Museum)
Photography is welcomed on board, but please do not use tripods.
Our shop has affordable products at pocket money prices. If you would like to visit the shop, please make sure you factor in time to do so in small groups. For health and safety reasons, a limited number of children are allowed in the shop at any one time. Groups must be supervised at all times buy a responsible adult.
Cutty Sark is committed to developing its learning programmes and on board experiences for everyone to enjoy. Please ask to speak to the Learning Manager about opportunities for SEND groups when you book.
We can offer the following to support your visit, by prior arrangement:
- braille and large print guides
- induction loops (limited areas only)
- folding wheelchairs
The ship’s stories are presented in a number of ways to support access needs, including:
- listening posts
- touch objects
- tactile plans of the ship
- tactile models of the ship
- sensory interactives
All levels of the ship are fully wheelchair accessible, but due to the ship’s historic nature, please note some areas of the main deck are not accessible to wheelchair users, and we can only allow a limited number of wheelchairs on site at any one time. There are accessible toilets on site.
If you are planning a visit that will require wheelchair access, please speak to the Bookings Unit about your requirements and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.
If you need to cancel
If you need to reduce numbers or cancel your booking for any booked activities you must tell us at least 28 days before the date of your visit.
