Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year

In 2015, Insight Investment, the leading European investment management company, became title sponsor of the global Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition – taking it to new heights.

Abdallah Nauphal, Chief Executive Officer of Insight Investment, said, ‘The Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition is a wonderful showcase for photographic talent and we are extremely proud to support such an inspiring competition. This partnership cements our commitment to the arts, sciences and cultural life. The original astronomers at the Royal Observatory were true pioneers. They commissioned Sir Isaac Newton to publish the Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica in 1687, regarded as the founding text of modern physics, and also contributed to the creation of actuarial science. Insight admires the pioneering spirit of these early star-gazers.’

Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year celebrates the best in astrophotography from across the globe and exhibits the winning entries at the Royal Observatory.

Ships, Clocks and Stars: The Quest for Longitude

United Technologies Corporation (UTC) was the corporate sponsor for our special exhibition Ships, Clocks and Stars: The Quest for Longitude, which explored how the world’s greatest minds solved one of its most difficult problems: how to find longitude at sea. Opening in July 2014, on the 300th anniversary of the passing of the Act of Longitude, the exhibition brought together over 180 objects to tell the longitude story and how it shaped the modern world.

As a company with innovation and exploration at its heart, United Technologies Company (UTC) was the natural sponsor for this exhibition. The dual themes of the development and progression of precision instrumentation and the commitment to embracing innovation to achieve the necessary real-world performance of the longitude measurement resonate strongly with UTC’s heritage.

Through its sponsorship, UTC was associated with an exhibition that won critical acclaim and attracted an audience of 95,000 visitors, supported by a strong marketing campaign across London and the South East. It garnered widespread press coverage. UTC is also sponsoring a tour of the exhibition to Washington, Connecticut and Sydney.
