Explore the Annie Maunder Astrographic Telescope (AMAT) in this free tour, part of Open House London 2019.
In 2018 Royal Museums Greenwich completed an appeal project to raise funds to restore the 1896 Altazimuth Pavilion and to install a brand new modern telescope facility in the unused upper floor.
This free tour, offered as part of Open House London 2019, combines an insight into the astronomy of the 19th century with what it's like to be an astronomer in the 21st century. The tour begins in the lower gallery floor before moving upstairs to see the telescopes and some of the amazing images captured from the heart of Greenwich using a variety of telescopes. The astronomer leading the tour can explain how we can use modern digital technology to go beyond what the human eye can see by using a computer-controlled telescope with sensitive, cooled digital cameras. The instruments are used to study stars, planets, the Moon, nebula, galaxies and, our star, the Sun.
