Scouting and Guiding groups can visit the Royal Observatory for an inspiring experience, with opportunities to meet astronomers, engage with cutting-edge science and explore big ideas that will help students earn badges.

The Space Explorers package provides Scouting and Guiding groups (such as Rainbows, Beavers, Brownies, Cubs, Guides, Scouts, Rangers and Explorers) with a fantastic and exciting programme to help fulfill different astronomy-related badges. Leaders can book a planetarium show plus a workshop suited to the age range of their group. Space Explorers can see the night sky including the Moon, stars and planets during the day in our state-of-the-art digital planetarium presented live by an astronomer and get a more in depth look at the Sun, Earth and Moon system through a workshop with demonstrations and models presented by one of our astronomy team.

Alongside the planetarium show and workshop, groups will have access to the historic part of Royal Observatory Greenwich, including the Prime Meridian, the Great Equatorial Telescope and the Time and Meridian Galleries. Additionally, there will be a self-guided visit to the Weller Astronomy Galleries, which are interactive, and a lunch space will be provided. Please note that groups will need to bring in their own packed lunches.

The number of supervising adults per group is based on the age of the Scouting and Guiding group:

  • KS1 (e.g. Rainbows, Beavers): 1 adult per 5 students
  • KS2 (e.g. Brownies, Cubs): 1 adult per 8 students
  • KS3 and KS4 (e.g. Guides, Rangers, Scouts, Explorers): 1 adult per 10 students

The minimum number for a group (adults plus children) is 14 people, or a flat group rate applies. The maximum group number is 70. The programme is designed to start at 10am and will last 4 hours. Lunch spaces will be provided at 12.45pm. Other time slots are possible at additional cost.

Groups must book in advance. If you are interested in the Space Explorers programme, please contact our public programming team for further details: Mikaela Webb at MXWebb@rmg.co.uk or phone +44 (0)208 858 4422 ext 6395.
