Presentation Small-Sword
Presentation Small-Sword. Owned by Vice-Admiral Sir Samuel Hood 1762-1814. The silver gilt (or gold?) and enamel hilt has an oval pommel inset with enamel plaques. The reverse plaque is damaged but the on the obverse plaque is a trophy of flags and nautical items. The grip and guard are inset (obverse and reverse) with enamel plaques of trophies, and embossed with laurels. The ricasso has inset enamel plaques (obverse and reverse) of laurel and palm branches. The lowerface of the shell has inset enamel plaques of the coats of arms of Hood and Jamaica, with embossed edges of laurels and has the motto: 'INDUS VIET-UNI UTERQUE-SER'. Inscribed on the upper face of the shell is 'SAMUEL HOOD OBTRES CIVES, SU. EXEM. ET SU, PERIC. SERVAT. DDD. SPQ. JAMAIC. MDCCXCI.' [To Samuel Hood on behalf of three citizens, for the sake of his example and the dangers he encountered, is given as a gift by the Senate and People of Jamaica 1791].
The blade has a triangular section and is blued and gilt. The white fish-skin scabbard has two lockets, and a chape of embossed silver gilt (or gold?). Inscribed on the top locket is 'OMNE NAUTAR. DERIC. MEO SUBIRE PARA.' [All maritime dangers I am prepared to undertake.] and on the mid locket is 'JEFFERYS & JONES.' The sword is hallmarked.
Vice-Admiral Sir Samuel Hood Bt. (1762-1814) a cousin of Samuel Viscount Hood and Alex Viscount Bridport. Lieutenant 11 October 1780; Commander 31 January 1782; Captain 24 May 1788; Rear-Admiral 2 October 1807; Vice-Admiral 1 August 1811; died of fever, Madras, 24 December 1814. Commanded the Zealous at Santa Cruz and the Nile. Awarded Swedish Order of the Sword for Services V Russians in the Baltic 1808.
This sword was received with other swords formerly belonging to Sir Samuel including WPN1546, WPN1548, WPN1550.
