Administrative / biographical background
Fred Scott served his apprenticeship with Duke & Ockenden Ltd of Littlehampton from 1905-1910. He then worked for Thames Iron Works (who were then fitting out HMS 'Thunderer' and building the machinery for HMS 'Chatham'. He began his seagoing career 1 November 1912 with Robert MacAndrews & Co as third engineer. He served during WWI with the New Zealand Shipping Co until October 1920 - then rejoined the MacAndrews Line. In 1937 he transferred as assistant superintendant of the associated company, the United Baltic Corporation and in 1946 was appointed marine superintendant of that company. He retired in 1955 following a heart attack.
