Barlow describes his boyhood near Manchester, employed in farm work and carting coal but more interested in seeing the world through travel.

Barlow's father is a poor farmer and Barlow does casual labour in local farms and coalpits to earn money. He attends school for a time, but at the age of about twelve he leaves home to be apprenticed to a whitester (bleacher) in Manchester.
