Barlow returns to his uncle and delivers post for him in Kent, but is then offered work on a ship sailing to Barbados. His uncle refuses to let him go as he fears the man is a kidnapper.

Barlow does not stay long in Dartford. He then delivers post in Kent for his uncle, until he meets a man who offers him work on a ship sailing to Barbados. His uncle fears the man is a 'sperite' or kidnapper, who entices people into service and sells them for sugar or tobacco when they reach the Caribbean.
