War with the Dutch is imminent, and Barlow is transferred to the frigate MONKE. The MADEROSSE is ordered to look for Flemings at Lands's End, but Barlow stays too long on a visit to another ship and misses its departure.

The MADEROSSE joins a fleet of about twelve ships, but the Duke of York orders the voyage to be stopped because war with the Dutch is imminent. Barlow is transferred into the frigate MONKE, in a fleet led by the ROYAL CHARLES. The fleet cruises in the Channel but does not meet any Dutch ships. Barlow's ship is ordered to Land's End to look out for Flemings. Barlow boards the LONDON, hoping to see his master, but stays too long and is left behind when his own ship departs for Falmouth.
