The YARMOUTH visits Sicily, where Barlow is impressed by the beauty and fruitfulness of the island. Sailing on to Naples they hear news of the wreck of the fireship PROVIDENCE.
They sight Sicily and see flashes of fire from Mount Etna. The ship then visits Messina, where the Italian and Spanish inhabitants do not allow them to go ashore for a few days. Barlow is impressed by the beauty of the town and by the fruitfulness of Sicily. He buys some silk stockings. They set sail for Naples, where they hear news of the wreck of the fireship PROVIDENCE, although without loss of crewmen.
