The RAINBOW is badly damaged by a storm near the Downs, and is driven across to France. Eventually they regain control of the ship and return to the English coast.
Near the Downs they see a large fleet and hear news of the accession of King William III. The frigate MONTAGUE presses all the ship's seamen in exchange for worse men from their ship. There is a violent storm and the RAINBOW fouls a man-of-war and has to cut down the mainmast. The damaged ship, now without its captain, is driven across to France and the sailors only regain control of it when the wind drops. They escape three small privateers which chase them.
