Against Barlow's advice the captain orders the best sails to be replaced by old sails, and as a result the old mainsail is destroyed in a gust of wind. The captain blames Barlow and relieves him of his post as chief mate.
The FLEET FRIGATE touches at Pula Candore, which Barlow briefly describes. As they sail on towards Saint Helena, the captain orders the best sails to be replaced by old sails, against Barlow's advice. When the old mainsail is torn to pieces in a gust of wind, the captain unfairly blames Barlow, orders him off the deck and relieves him of his post as chief mate. Barlow admits that he is outspoken.
