Pilcher was born at Dover in Kent. He qualified as master in 1922 (certificate number 043488). During the period 1934-1946 he was engaged as master on cargo liners of the Federal Steam Navigation Co Ltd including the SOMERSET (1918), SUFFOLK (1939) and DURHAM (1934). He was master of the latter vessel when she was mined and damaged during the Malta convoys in 1941. He was awarded the OBE for his services.
