Careless talk costs lives : Fougasse and the art of public information /James Taylor.
Fougasse (Cyril Kenneth Bird 1887-1965) was one of the most popular cartoonists and illustrators of the first half of the 20th century. His series of propaganda posters, entitled 'Careless Talk Costs Lives' was first issued in 1940. It was commissioned by the Ministry of Information. The posters were widely displayed as a reminder to the public of their obligations during war time and to encourage people to support the war effort in any way they could. This book covers Fougasse's life and career both during the Second World War and afterwards, when he undertook work for the London Underground and Punch magazine. Many of the posters are reproduced in colour.
