Good-bye, good luck : the biography of William McMaster Murdoch
The biography of William McMaster Murdoch (1873-1912). Born in Dalbeattie, Scotland, Murdoch served his apprenticeship on the Charles Cotesworth and joined the White Star Line in 1900 serving on ships in their fleet including the Runic, Arabic, Celtic, Germanic, Oceanic, Cedric, Adriatic and Olympic before joining the Titanic for its maiden voyage as first officer. Murdoch was on the bridge at the time of Titanic's collision with the iceberg and died as a result of the sinking. Rumours and newspaper reports at the time suggested that Murdoch had committed suicide although evidence from his fellow officers confirmed that he had been helping to launch and load lifeboats until entering the water. His body was never found.
