My inestimable friend / Alastair R. Brown.
A biography of Rear-Admiral William Brown (1764-1814), the author's great-great-grandfather. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 13 as a captain's servant before being appointed a midshipman. He passed his lieutenant's examination in 1788, was promoted to commander in 1791, post-captain in 1793 and was made Rear-Admiral in 1811. He served with the Mediterranean Fleet and joined the Channel Fleet in 1794 under Lord Howe. Brown, then in command of the Ajax, returned to England to give evidence at the court-martial of Vice-Admiral Robert Calder in 1805. A full list of Brown's ships and his family tree are provided.

Matthew Flinders, maritime explorer of Australia / Kenneth Morgan.
A detailed biography of Matthew Flinders (1774-1814). Flinders was the first naval commander to complete a detailed circumnavigation of Australia while in command of the Investigator, a voyage supported and promoted by Joseph Banks, President of the Royal Society. Earlier in his career, Flinders developed his navigational skills as a midshipman on Captain William Bligh's voyage on the Providence and while in command of the Norfolk, he and George Bass circumnavigated Tasmania (Van Dieman's Land) for the first time. This text sets his achievements in the wider context of Cook's discoveries and Pacific exploration and focuses on the nautical, geographic and other scientific work undertaken during the voyage by Flinders and the 'scientific gentlemen', who accompanied him. Flinders discovered and recorded many offshore islands around the Australian coast, found a navigable route through the Torres Strait and the Great Barrier Reef and undertook the first thorough survey of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Returning to England, he was held hostage at the Ile de France (Mauritius) for six years delaying the publication of A Voyage to Terra Australis and his atlas of maps until 1810. Flinders is credited with popularising the use of the term Australia and is commemorated throughout the country. The book has detailed notes and bibliography.

Matthew Flinders : the man behind the map /Gillian Dooley.
"Born at the end of the Age of Enlightenment and growing up as Romanticism took hold of European culture, Matthew Flinders was the embodiment of these seemingly irreconcilable movements. His achievements as a navigator and leader are impressive, but he was much more than an action hero, idolised by generations of admirers. In Matthew Flinders: The Man behind the Map Gillian Dooley looks to the primary sources to discover Flinders as a friend; a son, a brother, a father and a husband; as a writer, a researcher, a reader, and a musician - and above all as a romantic scientist."

Inside the US Navy of 1812-1815 / William S. Dudley.
"When the War of 1812 broke out, the newly formed and cash-strapped United States faced Great Britain, the world's foremost sea power, with a navy that had largely fallen into disrepair and neglect. In this riveting book, William S. Dudley presents the most complete history of the inner workings of the US Navy Department during the conflict, which lasted until 1815. What did it take, he asks, for the US Navy to build, fit-out, man, provision, and send fighting ships to sea for extended periods of time during the War of 1812? When the British blockade of 1813?14 severely constrained American sea trade, reducing the government's income and closing down access to American seaports, the navy was forced to innovate: to make improvements through reforms, to redeploy personnel, and to strengthen its industrial capacity. Highlighting matters of supply, construction, recruitment, discipline, medical care, shipbuilding, and innovation, Dudley helps readers understand the navy's successes and failures in the war and beyond. He also presents the logistics of the war in relation to fleet actions on the lakes and selected ship actions on the oceans, stresses the importance of administration in warfighting, and shows how reforms and innovations in those areas led to a stronger, more efficient navy."--Provided by the publisher.

Jane Austen's transatlantic sister : the life and letters of Fanny Palmer Austen /Sheila Johnson Kindred.
"In 1807, genteel, Bermuda-born Fanny Palmer (1789-1814) married Jane Austen's youngest brother, Captain Charles Austen, and was thrust into a demanding life within the world of the British navy. Experiencing adventure and adversity in wartime conditions both at sea and onshore, the spirited and resilient Fanny travelled between Bermuda, Nova Scotia, and England. After crossing the Atlantic in 1811, she ingeniously made a home for Charles and their daughters aboard a working naval vessel, and developed a supportive friendship with his sister, Jane. In Jane Austen's Transatlantic Sister, Fanny's articulate and informative letters - transcribed in full for the first time and situated in their meticulously researched historical context - disclose her quest for personal identity and autonomy, her maturation as a wife and mother, and the domestic, cultural, and social milieu she inhabited. Sheila Johnson Kindred also investigates how Fanny was a source of naval knowledge for Jane, and how far she was an inspiration for Austen's literary invention, especially for the female naval characters in Persuasion. Although she died young, Fanny's story is a compelling record of female naval life that contributes significantly to our limited knowledge of women's roles in the Napoleonic Wars. Enhanced by rarely seen illustrations, Fanny's life story is a rich new source for Jane Austen scholars and fans of her fiction, as well as for those interested in biography, women's letters, and history of the family."--Provided by publisher.

George Charles Smith of Penzance : from Nelson sailor to mission pioneer /Roald Kverndal.
"In the two previous books of his trilogy, Seamen's missions (1986) and The way of the sea (2008), the author researched how the seafarers' mission movement began and expanded. This third volume traces the captivating human drama surrounding the origins. It presents, for the first time ever, the embattled life of George Charles Smith---today recognized worldwide as the founder of the Maritime Mission Movement."--From back cover.

Ferries across the Humber : the story of the Humber ferries and the last coal-burning paddle steamers in regular service in Britain /Kirk Martin.
"Starting with an introduction about discovering the coal-burning paddle steamers of the Humber in the early 1970s the book continues with a brief history of the ferries of the Humber Estuary, the coming of the first paddle steamer, the Caledonia, in 1814 and the rapid expansion of steamers operating on the estuary. It includes personal memories of those who worked on, used and loved the Humber ferries. It especially looks at the paddle steamers, Tattershall Castle, Wingfield Castle and Lincoln Castle, which became the last coal-burning paddle steamers operating a regular service in the United Kingdom. An appendix lists over 80 paddle steamers from the Caledonia of 1814 to the last of the line the Lincoln Castle identified as working on the Humber Estuary from published and archive sources. It includes the diesel powered paddle vessel Farringford which saw out the service in 1981 and also other vessels associated with the Hull to New Holland ferry."--Provided by the publisher.
