Ideologies of Western Naval Power, c. 1500-1815 / edited by J.D. Davies, Alan James and Gijs Rommelse.
"This ground-breaking book provides the first study of naval ideology, defined as the mass of cultural ideas and shared perspectives that, for early modern states and belief systems, justified the creation and use of naval forces. Sixteen scholars examine a wide range of themes over a wide time period and broad geographical range, embracing Britain, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Sweden, Russia, Venice and the United States, along with the "extra-national" polities of piracy, neutrality, and international Calvinism. This volume provides important and often provocative new insights into both the growth of western naval power and important elements of political, cultural and religious history."--

The first mapping of America : the general survey of British North America /Alexander Johnson.
"The First Mapping of America tells the story of the General Survey. At the heart of the story lie the remarkable maps and the men who made them - the commanding and highly professional Samuel Holland, Surveyor-General in the North, and the brilliant but mercurial William Gerard De Brahm, Surveyor-General in the South. Battling both physical and political obstacles, Holland and De Brahm sought to establish their place in the firmament of the British hierarchy. Yet the reality in which they had to operate was largely controlled from afar, by Crown administrators in London and the colonies and by wealthy speculators, whose approval or opposition could make or break the best laid plans as they sought to use the Survey for their own ends."--Provided by the publisher.

Stena Line / Ian Collard
"The major company in the short-sea passenger and freight business in 2020 is the Swedish Stena Line, which operates services to Europe, Scandinavia and Ireland from United Kingdom ports. The company was founded in 1962 by Sten A. Olsson in Gothenburg, Sweden, and was one of the first ferry operators in Europe to introduce a computer-based reservation system. In the 1980s, Stena took over three other ferry companies and their ships. Various other acquisitions followed, including the Harwich to Hook of Holland route. The company doubled in size in 1990 following its takeover of Sealink British Ferries and Sea Containers. The company became Sealink Stena Line, then Stena Sealink Line, and finally Stena Line."--Provided by the publisher.

Castaways in question : a story of British naval interrogators from WW1 to denazification /Derek Nudd.
"They thought their war was over when they were hauled from the sea. Instead, captive German sailors were fed, clothed, and brought to London where they experienced British naval intelligence officers' deft skill at extracting vital information from their heads. Here we follow the naval interrogators' growing confidence and expertise from their pioneering first steps in World War I to their role in dismantling one of the most vicious regimes the planet has ever seen."--Provided by the publisher.

British Baroque: power and illusion.
''From the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 to the death of Queen Anne in 1714, the late Stuart period was a time of change for Britain. This book, which accompanies a major exhibition at Tate Britain London. Explores how art and architecture was used by the crown, the church, and the aristocracy to project images of power and status in an age when the power of the monarchy was being questioned. Including the work of the leading painters of the day, including Peter Lely, Godfrey Kneller, and James Thornhill. It celebrates ambitious grand-scale portraits, the persuasive illusion of mural painting, the brilliant woodcarving of Grinling Gibbons, and magnificent architecture by Christopher Wren, Nicholas Hawksmoor, and John Vanbrugh for St Paul's Cathedral, Hampton Court and Blenheim Palace, the great buildings of the age. Here is the opportunity to encounter a rich, sophisticated, but largely forgotten era of art history.''--Povided by the publisher.

Managing archives : foundations, principles and practice /Caroline Williams.
"Managing Archives provides a practical guide to archives management. It has three main target audiences: those who have been tasked by their organization to manage its archives but who have no prior training; those who are starting out as professionals or para-professionals in a record keeping environment and need basic guidance; and students who are currently studying for a professional qualification. Basic guidance is supplemented by comprehensive references to professional literature, standards, web sites etc. to enable the reader to further their studies at their own pace. The text includes a range of optional activities that enable the reader to translate principles into practice and feel greater 'ownership' with the guidance."--Provided by the publisher.

Beloved Emma : the life of Emma, Lady Hamilton
"Eighteenth-century Emma Hamilton was a woman ahead of her time. Her rise to fame and fortune seemed unstoppable - until she began her famous, doomed love affair with Admiral Lord Nelson. Beloved Emma traces Emma Hamilton's journey from Liverpool to London and life as an artist's model, through glittering success in Naples as the wife of Sir William Hamilton, and that legendary romance with Nelson, to her painful descent from the heights of fame to an early death in Calais. Flora Fraser captures the energy, purpose and sexuality that drove this extraordinary woman through her tumultuous life."--Provided by the publisher.
