Jug

Jug, transfer-printed in black and hand-coloured with black, hand painted bands around the neck. On one side a portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) with red ensigns and trophies behind and surmounted by Fame, with ships in the background. 'TRAFALGAR' is inscribed above the portrait. 'The Briton mourn (sic) what else can Britons do/While Bleeding Nelson rises to her view./Still is there cause for Triumph when she shews/The captured colours of our Vanquished foes./And greater still when FAME was heard to say/All all were Nelsons on that glorious DAY.' On the other side, a view of the Wearmouth bridge inscribed: 'A West VIEW of the IRON BRIDGE over the WEAR under the patronage of R. BURDON Esq MP.', 'Span 230 feet ht 100', 'Cast 214 Tons Wt 46', 'DIXON & CO, Sunderland 1813'. Below the lip, a verse surmounted by a sailing cutter: 'I envy no ones birth or fame/Their title, train or dress/Nor has my pride ever stretch'd its aim/Beyond what I possess/I ask not, wish not to appear/More beauteous, rich or gay,/Lord make me wiser every year/And better every day.' (Charles Lamb 'A birthday thought') 'DIXON & CO SUNDERLAND POTTERY.'
